Expressing Intention
Teddy : Do you have any plan tonight?
Alan : yes. Im going to watch Siska’s performance.
Teddy : What are you going to do there?
Alan : Im going to call her name and support her. So what
are you going to do later?
Teddy : Well, I think Im going to watch Siska’s performance,
too.
Alan : That’s great. We can go there together.
The dialogue above is asking for and giving information
about intention. An intention is an idea that you plan (or intend) to carry
out. A plan is arrangement for doing something considered in advance. If we
want to do something, it means we have an aim, a plan, an intention, or a
reason. There are some ways to asks intention or plan.
1. What is your plan?
2. What are you going to do?
3. What will you do?
4. What are you planning to do?
5. What do you want to do?
6. What would you rather do?
The following are main expressions of stating intention.

I’d like to = I would like to “Would like” means “want” but it is
more polite.
Function:
-Talk about dreams and ambitions
-It lets someone know what you would be/interest in doing something.
This can be a physical, mental, or verbal action
-To talk about what people want to do or are willing to do

Functions:
- At the moment we make a new decision or plan. The thought has just
come into our head
- Instant decision
- Plans decided at the moment of speaking

Functions:
- When we have made the decision
- When we want to talk about a plan for the future
- This plan does not have to be for near future
- To talk about plans decided before the moment of speaking
- Activity or plan already in thought or motion or intention related
to present time
- This is about to happen
- An activity that the person is about to do

There is another way to state a
plan, that is using present continuous or present progressive. Present
continous is explaining what we are doing now or for the future. We usually use
it also when the plan is an arrangement. Generally, it is used when the
arragenment involves more than one person, and we know the time and the place.
It is also used to describe people’s future plans.
Example : Alya is having a
meeting with her team tommorow.
